Korte inhoud: | The archaeological investigation on the All Saints’ Monastery of the Antwerp Augustinians during the spring of 2002 not only revealed late and post medieval features, but also a Gallo-Roman cremation grave. In a rectangular pit, two (originally four) tegulae formed a square tomb or loculus, in which an urn and grave goods were discovered. The urn contained cremation remains of a 30-35 year old woman, strongly-built, who had given birth to at least one child. Cremation had taken place shortly after death, on a funeral pyre with temperatures up to 850°C and more. The presence of burnt animal bones - pig and fowl - emphasizes the importance of animal gifts. Other grave goods, a beaker, a lid (with graffiti?), a plate, a glass aryballos and possibly a fibula probably serve to confirm the status of the deceased. Typo-chronological dating of the grave goods combined with a 14C-test on cremated bone resulted in dating the grave in the 2nd century AD or first half of the 3rd century AD. Paleobotanical study did not reveal significant data. The grave type deviates from what is common in the Scheldt valley and puts our view on previous interpretations of evidence from Gallo-Roman Antwerp in a different light. The recently discovered cremation grave probably belonged to a cemetery located opposite the northern settlement on which the later medieval city arose. |
