Korte inhoud:Monitoring a project such as the VTN-pipeline gave archaeologists the opportunity to obtain a cross-section of the habitation history in different parts of Flanders. By drawing a 'line across the landscape' they were able to achieve a better insight into the chronological and environmental differentiation in the settlement patterns in our regions. It is, however, important not to jump to far-reaching conclusions, since a considerable number of external factors would have greatly nuanced the picture. Still, the VTN-line indicates the existence of clusters in the area it cuts across, on the one hand even diachronic clusters of habitation in certain regions, on the other hand regions which were less preferential for habitation. Large ecological niches such as the Dender-Scheldt-region, the coastal area, the fertile loam regions or the transition areas between large environmental and pedologic entities would certainly have been seen as more attractive in comparison to the badly drained, poorer and environmentally less varied regions. Human presence in these latter areas cannot, of course, be excluded. It may be that the activities were of a more temporary (seasonal) or different, transhumant, nature as far as the coastal area was concerned (for instance, forestry). Such activities have left either no, or very different, remains.
