The aim of this project is to gather relevant data for efficient archaeological heritage management and to safeguard the most valuable sites for future research. The project consists of three phases: 1) inventory and survey 2) assessment and 3) protection of selected sites. The survey executed in 2001 focused on relatively well preserved sites under pinewoods in typical podzolic soils. Dry sandy areas, often dunes, near open water or wet depressions were isolated on topographical, pedological and historical maps, and investigated for the presence of artefacts by augering and sieving. In total, twenty sites were found or relocated, which points to the efficiency of the methods applied. Most sites are seemingly preserved under good conditions and await further assessment in anticipation of eventual legal protection. The survey on the contrary also showed that various antropogenic processes of disturbance and destruction, even near well-known prehistoric sites, are still ongoing in this already heavily damaged region.}, keywords = {}, author = {Marijn Van Gils, , and Marc De Bie, ,} }
